Vaibhav Sooryavanshi opens up on poor form before Zimbabwe tour

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has acknowledged that the past four months have been challenging, saying there have been "kaafi ups and downs" as he attempts to move beyond a lean run with the bat. The 15-year-old said he is now focused on making a fresh start during India's tour of Zimbabwe after a period that has tested him following his rapid rise.

The comments came after a remarkable swing in fortunes for one of Indian cricket's brightest teenage prospects. Sooryavanshi was the standout performer in India's ICC Under-19 World Cup triumph earlier this year, producing a blistering 175 from 80 balls against England in the final. Since then, however, he has endured a difficult run across higher levels of cricket, prompting scrutiny over his form after the extraordinary expectations created by his breakthrough season. 

The teenager explained that he is treating the upcoming series as an opportunity to reset after a demanding few months. His rise has been unusually rapid. After dominating age-group cricket, he earned widespread attention through a prolific IPL campaign before being pushed into discussions around India's senior side. That accelerated pathway also brought increased expectations whenever runs dried up.

Earlier this season, Sooryavanshi struggled to reproduce his explosive IPL batting while representing India A in Sri Lanka. Analysts noted that opponents adapted their bowling plans against him, particularly with spin, while questions emerged over balancing his naturally attacking approach with longer-format demands. 

Sooryavanshi's performances have also been discussed alongside India's selection decisions.

Despite being regarded as ready by assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, the teenager initially missed out on a senior T20I debut during the Ireland series. The coach maintained that Sooryavanshi would follow the same selection process as every other player despite his exceptional IPL campaign, stressing that established players would continue receiving opportunities.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar later questioned the handling of the youngster after he was left out following a brief run in the England T20I series, arguing that young players should be given a clearer run before judgments are made. Those views reflected the wider debate surrounding the management of one of India's youngest elite prospects rather than criticism of the player himself.

Unlike many teenage cricketers before him, Sooryavanshi has experienced intense public attention almost immediately after his emergence. Comparisons with previous prodigies have become common, although team management has repeatedly emphasised the importance of long-term development over immediate results. 

Sooryavanshi's comments offer a rare glimpse into how he has processed a demanding period after his meteoric rise. Rather than dismissing the criticism, he acknowledged the challenges while making it clear that his attention is now fixed on rebuilding momentum in Zimbabwe.

For India, the Zimbabwe tour represents another stage in the teenager's development rather than a defining examination of his career. The confirmed objective is a fresh start after several difficult months, with selectors and coaches continuing to monitor his progress as he adapts to increasingly competitive cricket.
