Two key dates define SA20 2027: January 17 for the opening match and February 21 for the final. Organisers have officially confirmed that the fifth edition of South Africa's franchise T20 league will run across 36 days, with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape opening the tournament against Pretoria Capitals before Newlands hosts the title decider in Cape Town.
The announcement marks the first major milestone ahead of SA20's fifth season. The schedule has been adjusted to start later than previous editions, accommodating England's ODI tour of South Africa before attention shifts fully to the domestic T20 competition. Six franchises will again compete in the double round-robin format followed by the playoffs.
What led to the SA20 2027 schedule decision
The revised calendar follows discussions around South Africa's international commitments. Rather than beginning during the traditional early-January window, SA20 will now start on January 17 to avoid a clash with England's ODI series, which serves as World Cup preparation ahead of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in South Africa later in 2027.
The tournament opens at St George's Park in Gqeberha with a repeat of the previous season's final between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals. Day two features Paarl Royals hosting Joburg Super Kings, while four Saturday double-headers have been scheduled on January 23, January 30, February 6 and February 13.
“There is no better way to start Season 5 than with a repeat of one of the most thrilling finals in our history.”
— SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith.
Graeme Smith and Cape Town welcome the announcement
League commissioner Graeme Smith described the fixture release as the first significant milestone before the new season, highlighting the decision to open with a rematch of the previous final.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis also welcomed Newlands once again hosting the final, saying the city is preparing for a significant year of cricket with the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup also due to be staged in South Africa. For Newlands, this will be the second successive SA20 final and the third overall, reinforcing its status as the competition's showcase venue.
Paarl also receives a landmark occasion, hosting a playoff fixture for the first time in SA20 history when Qualifier 1 takes place at Boland Park.
Stats
What happens next
The fixture announcement allows franchises to begin detailed planning ahead of player recruitment, pre-season preparation and ticket sales. Attention will now turn to squad announcements and overseas player availability as teams prepare for another season featuring six franchises and 34 matches.
Historically, SA20 has continued to expand its audience with each edition, while Sunrisers Eastern Cape enter Season 5 chasing another title after lifting the trophy in the previous campaign. The first statistic worth watching when the tournament begins won't be the final score—it will be whether the defending champions can extend their remarkable record in season openers.
