Mirabai Chanu's Historic Gold Headlines India's Strong Day 4 at Commonwealth Games 2026
India enjoyed its best day yet at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Sunday as Mirabai Chanu claimed a record-breaking gold medal, while Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi added silver medals to lift the country's overall tally to four. The weightlifting trio provided the biggest boost for the Indian contingent, with boxing also delivering encouraging results as multiple athletes advanced to the quarter-finals.
The fourth day of competition in Glasgow revolved around India's weightlifters, who delivered three podium finishes across different categories. Mirabai dominated the women's 48kg event with a Commonwealth Games record total of 190kg, securing her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. Earlier in the day, Rishikanta Singh finished second in the men's 60kg competition before Raja Muthupandi followed with another silver in the men's 65kg event. Those performances took India's medal tally to four after Jhandu Kumar's earlier bronze in para powerlifting.
Mirabai Chanu Delivers Another Commonwealth Games Masterclass
Mirabai once again proved why she remains one of India's most dependable athletes on the biggest stage.
The Olympic medallist recovered after missing her opening snatch attempt at 82kg before taking control of the competition. She successfully lifted 82kg in the snatch and later produced enough in the clean and jerk to finish with a Games-record combined lift of 190kg, comfortably winning the women's 48kg title.
The victory also placed Mirabai among an exclusive group of Indian athletes. According to the uploaded source, she became only the third Indian to win three consecutive individual Commonwealth Games gold medals, joining wrestlers Sushil Kumar and Vinesh Phogat.
"I feel very good. This is my third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. I am extremely happy."

India's Weightlifters Continue Medal Surge
Mirabai's success capped another productive day for Indian weightlifting.
Rishikanta Singh produced an impressive performance in the men's 60kg competition. He briefly set a Commonwealth Games record with a 121kg snatch, although Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan ultimately claimed gold after a stronger clean and jerk performance. Rishikanta settled for silver with a combined total of 264kg.
Later, Raja Muthupandi ensured India finished the day with another podium place. His total lift of 286kg—comprising 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk—earned silver behind Malaysia's Aznil Bidin, who established new Games records in both lifts.
Weightlifting has consistently been one of India's strongest sports at the Commonwealth Games, and Day 4 reinforced that trend with three medals from three finals.
Boxing Produces Positive Momentum
Away from the weightlifting arena, India's boxers also enjoyed encouraging results.
Preeti Pawar defeated Malawi's Deborah Mtenje in the women's 54kg Round of 16 after the referee stopped the contest, booking her place in the quarter-finals. Soon afterwards, Jadumani Singh earned a unanimous decision victory over Pakistan's Sumama Rehman in the men's 55kg category to move within one victory of a guaranteed medal.
Not every result went India's way, however. Aditya Pratap Yadav suffered defeat to Uganda's Nuhu Batte in the men's 65kg Round of 16 after leading following the opening round. The Ugandan recovered to secure a 3-2 judges' verdict.
Elsewhere, Lovlina Borgohain had already been assured of a medal after receiving a bye into the semi-finals, further strengthening India's boxing campaign.
Mixed Results Across Other Sports
India experienced a varied day outside the medal-winning disciplines.
Gymnast Tapan Mohanty finished 15th in the men's all-around final, while the men's 4x200m freestyle relay team improved significantly on its qualification time before finishing sixth in the final.
In lawn bowls, the women's pairs team of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh were eliminated after a tie-break defeat to England, while Putul Sonowal also failed to progress in the men's singles competition. India's women's 3x3 wheelchair basketball side suffered a heavy defeat against South Africa but still had another pool fixture remaining.
