Los Angeles Knight Riders edge Washington Freedom by one run to win first MLC title

Three wickets from Sunil Narine, three more from Jason Holder, and one nerveless final over from Shadley van Schalkwyk delivered Los Angeles Knight Riders their first-ever Major League Cricket title. Knight Riders defeated Washington Freedom by a single run in a dramatic MLC 2026 final at Oakland Coliseum on Saturday, sealing victory only after Lahiru Milantha was run out attempting a second run from the final ball.
The maiden title completed a remarkable turnaround for Los Angeles Knight Riders. After managing only five wins across their previous three MLC campaigns, they claimed eight victories this season, reached the playoffs for the first time and finished by lifting the trophy in front of a crowd of more than 10,000. Chasing 165, Washington Freedom fell agonisingly short at 163 for 9, despite Obus Pienaar's late assault threatening to swing the contest.
Andre Fletcher's powerplay gave Knight Riders the platform
Asked to bat first, Los Angeles made an aggressive start through Andre Fletcher while Colin Munro settled in at the other end.
Fletcher, nicknamed "Spiceman", dominated the opening six overs. He struck three boundaries off Ben Dwarshuis before taking on Lockie Ferguson with a straight six and a powerful drive through the covers. By the end of the powerplay, Fletcher had raced to 38 of the team's 54 runs.
Washington hit back immediately after the fielding restrictions. Nikhil Chaudhary produced a superb wrong'un to dismiss Fletcher for 47 from 27 balls, then followed it by removing Andre Russell for a duck with a sharp leg-break.
Munro briefly shifted momentum by launching Chaudhary for three successive sixes, but Rachin Ravindra dismissed him for 40 with a well-disguised delivery. Narine's promotion to No. 5 also failed as Ravindra forced him to chop onto his stumps for a duck.
Matthew Tromp then provided the late acceleration. His fluent 39 runs included aggressive strokeplay against spin, helping Knight Riders recover from 111 for 4 and finish on a competitive 164 all out.

Narine and Holder turned the chase on its head
Washington appeared in complete control midway through the chase.
According to ESPNcricinfo's Forecaster, Freedom held a 76% win probability before Sunil Narine transformed the match inside the powerplay.
The veteran spinner dismissed Mitchell Owen, Steven Smith and Rachin Ravindra in his opening spell. Smith was beaten by a sharply turning off-break, while Owen and Ravindra both succumbed to extra bounce. Narine finished with outstanding figures of 4-0-13-3.
Freedom rebuilt through Andries Gous and Nikhil Chaudhary, who shared a 65-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Jason Holder then produced the spell that reopened the contest.
His dismissal of Chaudhary not only broke the stand but also brought up 400 career T20 wickets. Holder removed Ben Dwarshuis and then Gous in the same spell to reduce Freedom to 109 for 6, shifting pressure firmly back onto the chasing side.
Match-defining numbers
Van Schalkwyk holds his nerve under immense pressure
The final over required 14 runs for Washington Freedom.
Obus Pienaar immediately launched the first ball for six, bringing up his maiden T20 half-century and reducing the equation dramatically.
Instead of panicking, Shadley van Schalkwyk responded with precision.
He yorked Pienaar on the second delivery before forcing Ian Holland to hole out from the third ball. Lockie Ferguson found a boundary to keep Freedom alive, leaving four needed from the final two deliveries.
Van Schalkwyk conceded only singles from both balls.
Milantha attempted a desperate second run from the final delivery to force a Super Over but was run out, confirming a famous one-run victory.
The finish also underlined Van Schalkwyk's remarkable journey. Having arrived in the United States with just two suitcases after domestic cricket in South Africa, he has now won both the Minor League Cricket and Major League Cricket titles.

What this victory means for Major League Cricket
Los Angeles Knight Riders have completed the biggest turnaround in franchise history. After missing the playoffs in each of the league's first three seasons, they lifted their maiden MLC trophy in their first knockout appearance.
The triumph was built on experience. Narine reinvented himself as a powerplay specialist throughout the tournament, taking 15 of his 18 wickets inside the first six overs, while Holder continued to deliver in decisive moments.
Washington Freedom will reflect on a chase that remained within reach until the final delivery. Pienaar's unbeaten 53 almost stole the trophy, but Knight Riders held their nerve when every run mattered.
The 2026 season ends with one of the closest finals in MLC history. The next question is numerical once again: how many teams can stop Los Angeles Knight Riders from defending their crown in 2027?
