Ishan Kishan replaces Abhishek Sharma as ICC's No. 1 T20I batter
Ishan Kishan has climbed to No. 1 in the ICC Men's T20I batting rankings for the first time, replacing India team-mate Abhishek Sharma at the top of the standings. The latest rankings, released by the International Cricket Council on Wednesday, also saw Australia's Travis Head become the world's top-ranked Test batter, while Joe Root slipped to third.
The reshuffle follows India's recent two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast and reflects performances over a rolling period rather than a single series alone. Kishan's strong ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign proved decisive in lifting him above Abhishek, who had held the No. 1 position for almost a year. The gap between the two Indians is seven rating points.
Kishan's rise built on sustained T20I form
Kishan's promotion caps a remarkable comeback after returning to India's T20I setup earlier this year. His World Cup campaign included 317 runs at a strike rate of almost 200, highlighted by a Player of the Match display against Pakistan. Although Abhishek scored more runs than Kishan during the Ireland series, the ICC's ratings system takes into account performances over a longer period, allowing Kishan to edge ahead overall.
The rankings update also marks another milestone for Indian cricket. Kishan becomes only the fourth Indian men's batter to occupy the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I batting rankings after Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Abhishek Sharma.
“Kishan becomes fourth Indian batter to top Men's T20I Batting Rankings.”
Test rankings also undergo major reshuffle
The ICC update extended beyond the T20I charts. Travis Head reached the top of the Test batting rankings for the first time in his career after England's Joe Root and Harry Brook both lost rating points following the third Test against New Zealand.
Head now leads the standings by a single rating point over Brook, with Root dropping to third after briefly reclaiming the summit only a week earlier. Meanwhile, India's Jasprit Bumrah returned to No. 1 among Test bowlers after New Zealand's Matt Henry slipped to second.
The movement represents the first time an Australian has led the Test batting rankings since Marnus Labuschagne held the position before Root took over in June 2023. That historical context underlines the significance of Head's rise, while the close margins at the top suggest further changes remain possible during the ongoing Test calendar.
What happens next?
The rankings will continue to evolve as international cricket resumes across formats. India's players are expected to feature in upcoming bilateral assignments, while the ongoing Test programme involving England, New Zealand and other leading nations offers immediate opportunities for further movement at the top of the batting and bowling charts.
For Kishan, the immediate achievement is a career first. For Abhishek Sharma, whose reign lasted close to a year, the rankings underline how narrow the margins have become among the world's leading T20I batters. The next ICC rankings update will determine whether the positions remain unchanged.
