Cape Verde's fearless World Cup dream ends as Argentina survive extra-time scare

Cape Verde's historic FIFA World Cup campaign ended with a 3-2 extra-time defeat to defending champions Argentina, but only after pushing Lionel Scaloni's side to the brink in one of the tournament's most memorable knockout matches. Argentina progressed to the Round of 16 thanks to an extra-time own goal by Diney Borges after Cape Verde had twice fought back to level the contest.

The Round of 32 tie at Miami Stadium looked, on paper, like a mismatch between the reigning world champions and tournament debutants ranked 67th in the world. Instead, it became a showcase of Cape Verde's organisation, resilience and attacking quality as they matched Argentina for 120 absorbing minutes before falling 3-2 after extra time. Argentina now advance to face Egypt in Atlanta.

Messi strikes but Cape Verde refuse to fade

Argentina eventually found the breakthrough in the 29th minute through Lionel Messi, whose composed finish after controlling Lisandro Martínez's lofted pass gave the holders the lead and marked his seventh goal of the tournament, taking his World Cup finals tally to 20.

Cape Verde refused to retreat. Their reward arrived in the 59th minute when Ryan Mendes threaded a pass through to Deroy Duarte, who finished confidently beyond Emiliano Martínez to level the scores.

Argentina created further opportunities, with Messi repeatedly testing goalkeeper Vozinha, but the veteran stopper produced several important saves to keep the African side in the contest and force extra time.

"Cape Verde twice came from behind against the reigning world champions before finally falling in extra time."

A dramatic extra-time battle decides the contest

Extra time delivered even more drama.

Lisandro Martínez restored Argentina's lead just two minutes into the additional period with a powerful finish, seemingly putting the holders on course for a routine conclusion.

Cape Verde had other ideas. Left-back Sidny Lopes Cabral produced arguably one of the goals of the tournament, unleashing a spectacular strike into the top corner before climbing into the stands to celebrate with family members.

Just when penalties appeared possible, Messi's corner created the decisive moment. Cristian Romero's header struck Diney Borges and diverted into his own net, giving Argentina a heartbreaking but decisive winner with six minutes remaining in extra time.

Cape Verde nevertheless departed with immense credit after becoming the only World Cup debutants to reach the knockout phase and stretching the defending champions to their limits.

A defeat that reshaped Cape Verde's football story

Argentina remain in contention to defend their world title, although head coach Lionel Scaloni admitted afterwards that knockout football leaves no room for easy victories. He praised Cape Verde's resilience and acknowledged how demanding the encounter proved to be.

For Cape Verde, elimination hardly diminished the achievement. Head coach Bubista described the campaign as a source of national pride after his side drew with Spain and Uruguay in the group stage before taking Argentina beyond 120 minutes. It was the country's first appearance at a FIFA World Cup, and their performances ensured they leave the tournament with a reputation far stronger than their world ranking suggested.

Argentina's attention now turns to a Round of 16 meeting with Egypt in Atlanta, while Cape Verde return home having produced one of the defining underdog stories of the 2026 World Cup.
